How a race works

A race is a leaderboard with a prize pool and a clock. You earn race points by playing, poker and casino both count, and when the clock runs out the players with the most points are paid from the pool in the order they finished. Then the board empties and the next race starts. There are three of them running at once, so a hand you play at breakfast counts towards the day, the week and the month together.

  • Entry is automatic. There is no ticket, no opt-in and no fee.
  • The pool is paid in USDT into your balance when the race resets, with nothing to claim.
  • The standings are live. The race page shows the top ten with their points and prizes; from place 11 down the names and prizes show but the points are masked.
  • The daily race resets at 00:00 UTC every day, the weekly on Sunday at 00:00 UTC and the monthly on the first of the month. Basepoker shows the time in your own zone; in Berlin that is 01:00 in winter and 02:00 in summer.
  • The race pages do not say how many points a hand or a bet earns. The standings are the only guide: when we looked, with 18 hours left in the day, the daily leader had 38,270 points, the weekly leader 299,664 and the monthly leader 823,230. The players at the top were ranked Silver and Gold, which are the ranks of players with a lot of volume.

The prize ladders

These are the prizes the three leaderboards show, place by place for the top ten and then the last paid place. The shape is the same in all three: a steep top five, a flat band from sixth to tenth, and a long tail of small prizes that reaches hundreds of players.

The pools are stated as $1,000, $10,000 and $50,000. The top ten of the daily race take $520 of the $1,000 and the other 190 places share the rest, which is how a place around 190 is worth a dollar. The weekly and monthly ladders are longer, so the middle places there are worth more than the same place in the daily: a 100th place in the month is paid from a $50,000 pool spread over a thousand players.

What it is worth, and to whom

For the players at the top the races are a second income on top of rakeback. First in the monthly race is $5,000, first in the weekly is $1,300 a week, and the same volume that gets you there also earns 32% rakeback on poker, 15% on casino bets and the rank bonuses. For everyone else the race is a free entry you get for playing the games you were going to play anyway. You cannot buy your way up a leaderboard except by playing more, and playing more than your bankroll allows to chase a race prize is the one way to turn a free bonus into a loss.

Two things to keep in mind. The casino bets count too, and the casino games have a house edge, so a race prize earned at the slots is paid for with the 3.5% those games keep; the edge does not go away because there is a leaderboard. And the pools, the ladders and the reset times are Basepoker's to change; what is on this page is what the race pages said on the day we read them.

Our own use of it is simple: we play the stakes our bankroll allows, we check the daily board now and then, and we count whatever the race pays as part of the rakeback rather than as a target. Our bankroll calculator gives the stake, and the rakeback page explains what the 32% is worth per hundred hands.

Questions

How do the Basepoker races work?

Every poker hand and casino bet earns race points, every account is entered automatically, and when a race resets the players with the most points are paid from the pool in USDT, with nothing to claim. The daily race has a $1,000 pool and 200 paid places, the weekly $10,000 and 500 places, the monthly $50,000 and 1,000 places.

When do the races reset?

The daily race at 00:00 UTC every day, the weekly race on Sunday at 00:00 UTC and the monthly race on the first of the month at 00:00 UTC, which is 01:00 in Berlin in winter and 02:00 in summer.

What does first place pay?

$160 in the daily race, $1,300 in the weekly race and $5,000 in the monthly race, as the leaderboards show them. Sixth to tenth pay $25, $120 and $700, and the last paid places $1, $5 and $9.

How many points does a hand earn?

The race pages do not say. The standings are the only guide: when we looked, with 18 hours left in the day, the daily leader had 38,270 points, the weekly leader 299,664 and the monthly leader 823,230.

Do the races make the casino games worth playing?

No. A race prize earned at the slots is paid for with the 3.5% those games keep, and the edge does not go away because there is a leaderboard. The races are worth most to players who put a lot of volume through the poker tables and would have played anyway.
